Nelsen Michaelson - Farmington City Council Candidate 2009

Here are Nelsen Michaelson's responses to questions he was asked by email:

Q: What is your vision for the commercial growth of west Farmington in particular and other areas of Farmington?
A: The population in Utah is expected to double in the next 30 years, which means that Farmington will probably also double its population.  That is a tremendous amount of growth and with growth, comes challenges and tough decisions about what types of commerce to invite into town and which ones we want to avoid.  There are several factors that go into these decisions, such as what the owners of the land would like to do, what the developers want to do and what the surrounding citizens want.  There has to be a balance between all of these entities so that we can best meet the needs and wants of everyone.  My intention is to support opportunities that come to Farmington that will help provide for the wants and needs of the people while maintaining the small-town atmosphere that we all enjoy.  With careful thought, we can invite commercial interests to join us in Farmington and provide for our wants and needs while still preserving the small town ambience that currently exists.

Q: With the changes in the economy what will be your approach to residential development in Farmington?
A: Farmington should stay the course with residential development in Farmington.  We have a zoning plan that was designed for growth while protecting the historical basis of the city and we should continue with that plan.

Q: Please state your position on the Legacy North to Legacy Parkway connector?
A: I understand that the State of Utah's Department of Transportation will need to connect Legacy North with the Legacy Parkway and the only way to do that is to go through Farmington.  We can't avoid having this connection pass through Farmington--it's a matter of how we go through Farmington.  My personal preference is to see if we can come up with a route that would be the least disruptive to the city.  Ideally, I would like to see this route stay within the confines of where we already have I-15 and the Legacy Parkway so that we don't have to have another highway slice up Farmington.  As residents, we will all need to express our desires to UDOT so that they will think of more creative ways to accomplish getting traffic through Farmington.

Q: What perspective can you give on the recently passed Farmington City Master Transportation Plan?
A: I want to study and learn more about the plan before commenting too much on it.  I'm sure that a lot of thought went into it and I want to understand the logic that was applied.

Q: What impacts do you see on west Farmington from the changes in the Transportation Master Plan?
A: I see that city planners are expecting substantial growth in west Farmington over the next few years and are anticipating additional traffic with that growth.  The plan is designed to help manage the traffic that is expected to increase.

Q: What changes if any do you want enacted in Farmington and Farmington City government?
A: I am against increasing the number of laws that exist in our society in general and will not support a lot of additional laws being passed in Farmington because with those laws come the costs associated with interpreting them and enforcing them.  I would rather see us live principles that will enable us to get along well and look out for each others' welfare.  I would like to see Farmington becoming more unified and working together to achieve the dreams that we have for Farmington.  We all want Farmington to be a safe and prosperous place to rear our children and achieve our dreams.  We need to ensure that the Farmington City government aids us in having a safe and prosperous city.

Q: What Farmington issues are most important to you?
A: The most important issues to me at this time are ensuring that our city supports our ability to work and enjoy recreational activities in a beautiful surrounding.  I want to encourage citizens and businesses to keep our city clean, maintained and vibrant so that we can be proud of where we live and enjoy the beauty around us.  We need to support initiatives that keep our city well-maintained, with an excellent infrastructure and development that enhances the natural beauty that currently exists.

Q: What else do you want said about you on farmingtoncitizens.org?
A: I would like the citizens of Farmington to know that I have years of leadership experience, developing visions, goals and strategies for corporations, community groups and church groups and that I am prepared to use these skills in enhancing the goals and strategies that we want to have in place in Farmington so that we can work together to achieve the goals and strategies that we come up with.
